Call For Proposal 2014 - Whitley Fund for Nature

Posted by Unknown Tuesday, September 3, 2013 0 comments
Closing Date: October 31,2013.

Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is pleased to offer “Whitley Awards” to outstanding biodiversity conservation leaders around the world. Whitley Awards are both an international profile prize and a form of project funding (currently £35,000 over one year).

The Whitley Awards are for wildlife and nature conservation focused projects. Application to the Whitley Awards is open and applicants do not need to be nominated.

Eligibility:
·      Whitley Awards winners are nationals of the countries where their conservation activities are focused (i.e. they were born there or have lived there a long time and have achieved national status) or are local to the region in which they work. This is because we have found these people often have the understanding necessary to bring about long term change and build capacity locally.  Recent expatriates from developed, high-income economy countries are not eligible for Whitley Awards.
·  Whitley Awards focus on individuals working in locations where international funds are hardest to raise, most needed, and will make the largest conservation impact. The strategic focus of the Whitley Awards is national conservation leadership in countries that are not defined as a High Income Economy by the World Bank

·  Applicants must be able to communicate in English, and be capable of compiling a written report to describe and quantify the success of their work with appropriate academic references.

Focus Area:
·      Nature conservation
·      Ecosystem approach
·      Engage the local community and build capacity
·      Education

Grant Program 2014 - Zoos Victoria: International Conservations Grant

Posted by Unknown 0 comments
Closing Date: October 31,2013.

Zoos Victoria’s International Conservation Grants build on our long-standing commitment to international conservation partnerships. The grants recognise engaging with and building the capacity of people to save wildlife is a significant challenge, and one that we believe is essential if we are to secure sustainable long-term conservation outcomes for wildlife.
Grant bids will be accepted up to AUD 20,000 for approved 12 month projects.

·      The theme for the 2013 round of grants is ‘Wildlife Conservation through Community Engagement’. This recognises the importance of engaging people in protecting wildlife, whilst building social capacity, both of which are critical for the conservation of wildlife.
·      Approaches that influence the adoption of conservation sensitive-behaviours will be favoured.
·      Projects supported through this program must demonstrate meaningful on-ground benefits to both wildlife and people.

Eligibility:
·      Any organisation or group able to undertake projects that meet the above theme are eligible to apply.

·      Projects must be submitted using the Zoos Victoria Conservation Grants Application Form

Grant Program 2014 - Tree Fund: Grants for Arboriculture and Urban Forestry

Posted by Unknown 0 comments
Closing Date: October 1,2013.

The Jack Kimmel International Grant Program, championed by the Canadian TREE Fund, honors the late Jack Kimmel who was the former Director of Parks for the City of Toronto. He is remembered for his contribution of 46 years of leadership to the ISA and its Ontario chapter. Jack Kimmel grants provide much needed funding to arboriculture and urban forestry researchers all over the world. This grant is administered by the TREE Fund, with participation from the Canadian TREE Fund in the evaluation process.

Projects are expected to be completed within one to three years. Grant award amounts are limited to a maximum of $10,000 and will vary depending upon the adjudged value of the project relative to the needs of the arboriculture community. No project may receive more than one award from this program. Please note that funds cannot be used to pay for overhead expenses or student tuition and fees.

Priority Areas:
The TREE Fund research priority areas are derived from the Revised National Research and Technology Transfer Agenda for Urban and Community Forestry. Proposals in the following priority areas are more likely to be funded, but all proposals will be considered.
§  Root and soil management: Many urban tree problems originate below ground. Promoting root development, protecting roots from injury and managing conflicts with infrastructure are issues that arborists encounter regularly. Managing roots includes soil management.
§  Propagation, planting and establishment: Methods of ensuring survival and vigorous growth of trees after planting are of concern to arborists and the entire green industry. Arborists are increasingly dealing with problems that originate in, or could be avoided during the planting process.
§  Plant health care: Healthy plants have more effective defense systems and are better able to resist pests. Complete understanding of plant health may lead to new pest control strategies.
§  Risk assessment and worker safety: Safety is a major concern. It can be a life-or-death issue to both tree workers and the public. Detection of defects, and knowing how they develop, are important. Improved equipment and work practices are needed.

§  Urban forestry: Management of urban trees and forests requires improved understanding of how urban forest ecosystems function, their management, and how they interact with people in communities and at the urban/rural interface.
