ELRHA's Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF) has launched an ambitious new programme of work to stimulate innovation in emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

Supported by £3.3 million from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the HIF is calling upon creative minds from far and wide: from inventors in their garden shed to established product designers, to address the most pressing challenges facing emergency WASH practitioners.

Through open innovation and crowd sourcing experts InnoCentive, the HIF has launched the first in a series of challenges to inspire individuals' imaginations.

Latrine lighting was highlighted in the gap analysis we commissioned and by the HIF's technical working group as a continuing humanitarian problem that requires significant innovation. Through the InnoCentive HIF pavilion, potential 'solvers' can read the 'latrine lighting' challenge scope and respond with their ideas. The best idea will receive up to $20,000.
