Fellowship 2014 - UNESCO: Research Fellowships Programme

Reinforcing its belief in “people building the next era”, the Government of Japan offers 20 fellowships per year, for the twelfth consecutive year, to be awarded to deserving candidates from developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in four areas of development of particular interest to UNESCO.

UNESCO designed the project “UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme” (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) in the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources which was established in November 2000 by the Government of Japan to enable UNESCO to give impetus to research in four areas under UNESCO’s Priority Programme Areas. 

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) funded under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas:
§  Environment (with particular emphasis on water sciences);
§  Intercultural Dialogue;
§  Information and Communication Technologies; and
§  Peaceful conflict resolution.

Eligibility:
Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:
1.   Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.
2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.
3.    Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1974 will not be considered under the Programme.
4.    The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.
5.    Priority attention will be given to: * Women candidatures  * Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)  * African researchers

6.    Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

Fellowship Program 2013 - United Nations International Law

The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is a six-week course organized annually by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, under the Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, which is one of the cornerstones of the United Nation’s efforts to promote the rule of law. The International Law Fellowship Programme is designed to enable qualified persons, in particular, mid-level government legal officers and young teachers of international law from developing countries, and countries with emerging economies, to deepen their knowledge of international law.

The Courses:
The Fellowship Programme consists of a six-week summer course at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands. Fellows attend courses in public international law at The Hague Academy of International Law and participate in lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs. The courses are given in either English or French.The 2013 Programme will be conducted in English.

Fellows are selected on the basis of their qualifications, the needs of their respective countries and the potential benefits they may derive from the fellowship in their professional life. Preference will be given to candidates from countries whose nationals have not been awarded a fellowship in the immediately preceding years and to candidates from least developed countries.

Financial Arrangements:
The Fellowship Programme will cover the fellowship recipient’s travel costs in economy class, medical insurance, the training material and the registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law. In accordance with policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships, participants will receive a stipend to cover their living expenses. Accommodation will also be provided by the Fellowship Programme.
Additional places will be made available for self-funded participants from developed countries and employees of international organizations who will have to bear all costs associated with their participation (travel, accommodation, living expenses, registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law).

Scholarship Program 2013 - HONJO International: Scholarship For Foreign Students

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation:

Outline of Scholarship
1.     This scholarship is open to foreign students who will attend a graduate school at a Japanese university.
2.     The payment of the scholarship money will be issued starting from April, 2013.
3.     The scholarship winners are under no obligation to repay the amount they receive from the Foundation.
4.    The period of the scholarship is set in accordance with the shortest period of time required to complete the intended degree. The student, once awarded the scholarship will be able to choose the option (1), (2) or (3) as below.
 (1) ¥200,000 per month for1 or 2 years
            (2) ¥180,000 per month for 3 years
            (3) ¥150,000 per month for 4 or 5 years
   An extension will not be given on the pre-determined scholarship period nor would the student be allowed to change his or her courses after the scholarship period has commenced.
   Those whose enrollment period is shorter than one year are not eligible to apply. 
5.  Travel expenses for attending an international conference, etc. will be provided to scholarship students following to our scholarship provision rules.
6.   The student is not permitted to receive any other scholarship in conjunction with the scholarship offered by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation.
7.     The student cannot gain employment other than part-time work related to his or her studies such as teaching assistant, research assistant, or related to international exchange affairs as translator or interpreter while receiving this scholarship
8.  You need to come for an individual interview almost every month; we would like you to participate to events that we will hold.
9.     After you graduated, you will be required to attend our alumni events.

Number of Scholarships Available
15 to 20 students

Requirements
 (To be considered for the scholarship, the student must satisfy ALL of the requirement criteria below.)
1.    The student is registered to attend a graduate school in Japan and does not possess Japanese citizenship. His or her academic achievement as well as moral character is exemplary. He or she must be considered to be in need of financial aid due to extenuating financial circumstances.
2.    The student must be registered to attend or have been accepted to attend a graduate school after April 1, 2013. He or she must be able to provide any of the following documentation: a certificate of enrollment, a letter of admission or a letter attesting to the fact that the student has been accepted.
3.    To be eligible, students enrolled in a PhD Program must have been born after March 31, 1977. Those enrolled in a Master’s Program must have been born after March 31, 1982.
4.   The student must be able to assure the committee that he or she will be able to secure employment in their home country after graduating from a graduate school. This does not require him or her to have employment guaranteed or to return his or her home country immediately after graduating the university, but he or she is expected to have strong will of working inhis or herhome country in the future.
5.  The student must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, andmust be able to attend the events organized by the foundation and take part in the network as an alumni member.
6.    The student must be able to carry an everyday conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese.
